Beaches To Try

PROTARAS

Fig Tree Bay - A beautiful beach at the end of the Protaras strip.  Very busy in the summer, but a lovely family beach.  Facilities available include all watersports, enough tavernas to satisfy everyone and the obligatory sun beds and sun shades.

Green Bay – On the outskirts of Protaras on the road to Cape Grecko.  A beautiful small cove with sun beds.  Water sports facilities along with a scuba diving school (I think the first lesson is free!).  Ice cream man comes several times during the day.  This is the perfect get away from it all beach!

Penera Beach - A small cove with plenty of facilities.  Many novice scuba divers explore the waters in this area.  Plenty of bars and tavernas and you can rent a sunbed and shade.

Konnos Bay - This beach is located halfway between Protoras and Ayia Napa.  It is a small cove with shallow waters.  Watersports are popular here.  This beach gets extremely busy during August and particularly at weekends.  This beach is not recommended if you have any kind of walking difficulty because it is only accessible by using a steep pathway.

Sunrise Beach (Protaras)

Lovely sandy beach with turquoise sea.  The water is quite shallow and therefore ideal for children or for paddling.   It is within easy reach of tavernas and cafes.  Parking can be found by the Vrissiana hotel and it’s easy accessibility makes it ideal for families or anyone with limited mobility.  Sunbeds, sunshades and a large variety of water sports are available.

AYIA NAPA

Liminaki Beach - This is the beach directly in front of the marina and stretches from the sea caves on the outskirts of town to the harbour area. There are plenty of facilities to be found here, cafes, restaurants, sun beds, ice cream...Ideal for families.

Nissi Beach - Probably the most famous of all the Cyprus beaches.  Beautiful white sand, turquoise waters and plenty of facilities. This is the beach for the younger holiday makers and where all the beautiful people go. Go see it though, it's gorgeous. It is probably the Number 1 for Cyprus beaches.

Lanta Bay and Makronissos Beach - If you want two lovely Cyprus beaches but want escape the dizzy heights of Nissi Beach, then move along the coast a little. There are plenty of facilities such as sun beds, showers, bars and beach tavernas.  Great if you want to read that book you brought!

Ayia Thekla - Located just past the water park, this beach is perfect for everyone. The shallow waters make it great for the kids, and there is a resident lifeguard, sun beds and shades for hire. The little taverna completes the picture.  Get there early as it is extremely popular here with tourists and the locals, but it is lovely...

The Kermia Beach where in one of its bays there is a Cyprus nudist beach, so I’ve heard!!!!

KAPPARIS Beaches

‘Boatman’s Beach’

This is the nearest beach to the complex favoured by the Cypriots as a BBQ area.  Not the sandiest of beaches and it is quite rocky making it difficult to get into the sea.  However, it is used by some residents to launch their canoes!

‘Fireman’s Beach’

This is a really pretty beach and the water is extremely clear – you can see the fish swimming around your feet.  Sandy bottomed sea making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling or ball games.  Sun beds and shades are available.  Car parking available at the top of the cliff, steep steps with handrail leads onto the beach.  No water sports.  However, as with several of the local beaches they can at times be a bit messy.

Malama Beach

Very similar to Fireman’s but smaller.  It does have the advantage of having water sports available.  Again, parking can be found at top of cliff with steps and handrail leading to beach.  Malama Taverna/Café at the top of the steps – open to non-residents

Ayia Triada

Very scenic beach with a small harbour and fisherman’s chapel.  Sun beds and shades available.  No water sports.  Local boat trips depart from this beach.  The beach is sandy but there is a lot of pebbles on entering the sea.  Excellent for beach games but not ideal for paddling.  Easy access for people of all ages.

RESTAURANTS & TAVERNAS

Here are this month’s recommendations ………………………….

  1. The Lord Mayor’s Tavern, Paralimni

This small but quaint taverna serves a variety of food, specializing in chicken dishes and Cypriot fayre Pat’s Favourite:  “Chicken Cyprienne” which is chicken breast stuffed with cheddar cheese and onions, covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried.  It is served with mashed potatoes to die for and fresh locally grown vegetables.  The  house wine is very reasonably priced at 4.00 CYP per litreLocated in the centre of Paralimni.

  1. Dekhelia Fish & Chips

Yes really!!  Worth travelling 2500 miles to Cyprus for the best fish and chips ever.   Typical chip shop menu available but the fish is exceptionally good.  Sit down inside the wooden cabin for a more formal meal with Cypriot salad and bread or choose take-away and sit on the beach!  Either way is a perfect way to eat your mushy peas overlooking the sea.  Located at Dekhelia Garrison.

  1. Astoria, Protaras

Although part of the more touristy area of Protaras, this Resturant & Steak House is worth a look.  All the usual Cypriot dishes are available, together with grills, pasta dishes etc.  You will be greeted at the door by Kris, the owner, and his parrot.  “Linda’s Favourite:  Chicken Astoria which is chicken breast cooked in white wine with ham, prawns and various other appetizing titbits, (to find out requires a visit!)  can be served with chips or jacket potatoes and fresh vegetables.  Located opposite Waves bar and Dancing Waters, Protaras.  (N.B.  If you happen to be there around 9.00 pm you get to see most of the water show for free!).
